Death toll victims of Sendong almost 1,000--more than twice Ondoy’s death victims

The number of death victims from storm Sendong is feared to have  reached  beyond 1,000 mark today, Tuesday morning, December 20, 2011.  It was stated by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) early this morning before the visit schedule of President Aquino III.

For the toll victim update this morning, NDRRMC recorded around 957 people as confirmed dead and still 49 people missing.

The increasing death number of storm Sendong has surpassed twice the confirmed number of tropical storm Ondoy fatalities in 2009.  Most of them who lost their lives last weekend were residents along the riverbanks and islet of the mid river of Cagayan de Oro which, according to geologists, shouldn’t have been occupied by the people.

So far, this is Cagayan de Oro’s list of largest number of death victims.

It was reported that 1,582 people got injured and 432 were saved, as stated in the report.

Likewise, NDRRMC told that storm Sendong has now victimized 63,079 families or approximately 338,415 people within 260 villages in thirty towns then eight cities in 13 provinces.

Out of 9,743 families, people are now being attended to in around sixty-two evacuation centres.
Property damaged is estimated to have reached Ph 1,936,415,000 which also includes Ph 385,015,000 in Bicol and Ph 1,551,400,000 in Caraga.

NDRRMC reported that there are at least 6 roads in Caraga and Cordillera, and 7 bridges in Visayas (Central) and Regions ten and eleven were damaged by Sendong.

Operations Officer, Alex Uy, of RDRRMC in Cordillera clarified, however, that the big roads in Mountain Province and in Apayao were already damaged by typhoon Sendong even before it hit the country.

Sendong Victims were offered Church Donations

Lots of church goers donated cash to church collections for Sendong victims at 4:00 a.m. mass, according to dzBB.

The Manila Archdiocese said they made a 2nd collection last Monday and will finish on Christmas Day to be donated to the victims of Sendong.

Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila Archbishop issued a circular directive to rectors, chaplains, and priests in archdiocese. He requested in his circular that 2nd collection be done for every Mass until December 25 to help the victims affected by Sendong.

As a united Filipino nation, let us keep praying and helping the victims of storm Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and the neighboring provinces as the fatalities almost reach to 1,000 deaths.
